Volume 1

Entrepreneurship and Development in the 21st Century

Editors: Cole C. Scanlon and Bruno S. Sergi

Publisher: Emerald Publishing Group

Description: There is a convergence of trends that make investigating entrepreneurship and development in the 21st Century both relevant and timely. The volume of venture capital has almost tripled since 2006. In the world of international development, concepts like micro-entrepreneurship have been growing in popularity. All the while, it has been well-established that business creation is an essential driver of economic growth. Entrepreneurship spurs the creation of new technologies and new jobs. There is a diverse array of components of these trends. For instance, there are within-country and across-country differences in the extent and nature of this growth. And there are political and cultural influences. There is also variability in how entrepreneurship manifests, from the entrepreneur receiving a microloan in India to the social entrepreneur starting an environmentally-conscious clothing business.

The purpose of Entrepreneurship and Development in the 21st Century is to acknowledge the intersection of entrepreneurship and development by compiling a diverse array of related academic papers. Each of the papers will be unique contribution to the field and will use economic, sociological, and political perspectives. Prior to publication in this book each academic paper, will be presented and reviewed at Harvard's 2018 Entrepreneurship and Development Conference. Research paper topics through Harvard’s IQSS Lab for Entrepreneurship and Development, the host of Harvard's 2018 Entrepreneurship and Development Conference, has ranged from, “Diné Entrepreneurship: Indigenous Contemporary Entrepreneurship”, to “Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth: Is Entrepreneurship More Effective at Stimulating Growth in a High-Income Trap Economy Than in a Smaller, Rapidly-Growing Economy?”, to “The Influence of Collectivism on Microfinance in Senegal,” to “The Economics of Venture Capital.” We expect Entrepreneurship and Development in the 21st Century to have a similar diversity of topics, while also been synthesized by the common thread of investigating entrepreneurship through the elements that facilitate it and its effects on the broader economy.
